Licenses for account main page.

The Licenses for account page is part of the Altium Account Manager. From here, you can view all licenses that you have purchased from Altium. For an On-Demand license license, you can manage how the license is used – assigning the seat(s) of the license across one or more defined groups of users in the account.

You can also view usage statistics for a license. For On-Demand licenses, this allows you to fine-tune the assignment of your license seats, in order to better maximize the use of the license among your users.

You cannot add licenses to, or delete licenses from, your account using the Altium Account Manager.

Browsing Licenses

Whether you are browsing licenses for the entire account, or only those assigned to a particular group, controls at the bottom of the page cater for moving through the licenses to find a particular license – in the same way as those used when browsing users.

Controls for stepping through the licenses.

The current license is indicated at the center of the set of navigation buttons, with the total number of licenses (for the account, or assigned to the specific group) indicated to the right.

The Filter field for licenses is a little different to that available when browsing users and groups. Rather than filtering based on text entered, it simply filters based on chosen license type from an associated drop-down menu.

Editing a License

To edit the contact for a license, simply click on the button, along the bottom of the page. The Select contact popup form will appear, from where you can choose the person to be used as the license contact, from a drop-down listing of all users in the account. After clicking OK, changes to the license will be saved and the Contact field on the page refreshed accordingly.

License Assignment

Main article: Assigning On-Demand Licenses (Altium Account Management)

For an On-Demand license, you have the ability to assign that license for use by a specific group of users. If it is a multi-seat license, you can assign seats across one or more defined groups. This provides global floating license capability – within the geographic scope of your license and the conditions set out in the EULA – without needing to implement your own server.

By default, when an On-Demand license is created by Altium for your account, that license (and all of its seats) will be assigned to the system "All Account Members" group. Reassign the license as required.

In terms of license assignment within the Account Manager, you can either browse to a particular license and allocate which groups can use it, or you can browse to a particular group and assign one or more licenses to it.

Whether you choose to assign licenses to a particular group, or allocate groups to a particular license, the Account Manager streamlines the process of
license assignment.

License Activation

If you have purchased a Standalone or Private Server license, you can activate that license directly from the Licenses for account page. Simply browse to the required license and then click the Activate license link. The Activate License pop-up form will appear, from where you can select which version of Altium Designer the license is to be activated for. For a Private Server license, you can also nominate whether activation is for a Primary or Secondary Private License Server.

Choose which release of Altium Designer to activate the license for.

Once you have made your selection, simply click the Activate license button, then use the subsequent dialogs that appear for your browser to save the license file to the desired location.

When activating a Standalone license, you can activate for any of the supported releases of Altium Designer, but only one at a time.
When activating a Private Server license, you must repeat the activation process for each supported release of Altium Designer that you wish the license to serve. If, for example, you wish to serve S09 and W09 releases, you would activate the license twice – once for Summer 09 and once for Winter 09 – obtaining two license files.

Once you have saved the required license file(s) you can then install the license(s) onto the target computer that is running Altium Designer, or the Private License Server, as required and in accordance with the EULA. For a Standalone license, this is performed from the My Account page within Altium Designer (DXP»My Account) – see Adding a Standalone License File. For a Private Server license, this is performed from within the Licensing dialog – see Manually Adding Licenses to a Private License Server.

Viewing License Statistics

For each license in the account, you can also view license statistics – showing weekly or monthly usage graphs and on which day the maximum number of concurrent seats for the license were used (pertinent for a multi-seat license). This statistical analysis is most useful for On-Demand licenses, and can give you an indication of whether a license could be put to better use by simple reassignment between the groups that use it.

To view license statistics, simply browse to the required license and click on the View license statistics link. You will be taken to the Statistics for license page.

Get a real idea of how an On-Demand license is being used with the Account Manager's statistical data.

The top of the page displays information on:

  • How many seats are available for the license
  • The maximum number of seats that were used concurrently, and on which date that happened.

Below this information is a graph of license usage. This can be displayed as either a '7 day view' or a '28 day view' – switch between these using the links at the bottom-left of the graph. The actual reporting period is specified using the Select reporting period popup form, accessed by clicking on the date link at the top-right of the page.

Specify the period of time for which you wish to view license usage statistics.

By default, the reporting period will be set to show usage for the last 7 days, up to and including the current day's date. If you choose the option to show usage for the last 28 days, or define a specific reporting period that is greater than 7 days, links will be active for the graph to browse back and forth through the weeks in that period.

You can also switch between local time (default) and UTC time, courtesy of links at the bottom-right of the graph.

Clicking within the graph will take you to the License usage for license page. This page presents more detailed information regarding use of the license, over the specified reporting period. Information includes:

  • When the seat of the license was taken and released
  • Who used the license
  • Which group that user is a memeber of
  • Whether the seat was roamed.

More detailed usage information can give you a better idea of who is using the license, and in which groups.

Use the controls at the bottom of the page to browse through the usage events for the license. To go directly to the first usage event for a particular day, click on the corresponding bar entry for that day on the graph.
